Pounding Bench Wooden Toy with Hammer

This wooden pounding bench gives toddlers a simple, hands-on activity built around tapping, pushing and repeating. With colourful pegs and a lightweight wooden hammer, children can explore what happens when they hit a peg and watch it move through the bench.

What Makes This Toy Useful?

The simple hammer-and-peg activity gives young children a clear action to repeat, making it easy to explore movement, cause and effect and early coordination through play.

• A simple cause-and-effect activity: Each tap creates a visible result as a peg moves through the bench, helping children connect their action with what happens next.
• Practise controlled movements: Holding the hammer and aiming it towards a peg gives children an opportunity to practise hand-eye coordination and controlled arm movements.
• Repetition with a purpose: Children can repeat the same action many times, gradually experimenting with where and how they tap the pegs.
• Explore colours while playing: The bright pegs provide natural opportunities to notice, name and compare different colours during the activity.
• Build confidence through small achievements: Knocking a peg through the bench gives children a clear, immediate result that can encourage them to try again.

Ways Children Can Play With It

The activity is intentionally simple, but parents can introduce small variations to keep the experience interesting as toddlers become more comfortable with the hammer and pegs.

• Start with free hammering: Let your child explore how the hammer feels and what happens when they tap the different pegs.
• Name the colours: Ask your child to find or tap a particular coloured peg, turning the activity into a simple colour-recognition game.
• Try one peg at a time: Encourage your child to focus on one peg and keep tapping until it moves through the bench.
• Take turns: A parent or sibling can choose a peg while the child decides how to reach it, creating a simple shared-play activity.
• Explore different rhythms: Once your child is comfortable, try slow taps, faster taps or counting the taps together to add a little variation.
