Volcano Kit – Hands-On Earth Science STEM Kit

Volcano Science Kit lets children turn an Earth science concept into a hands-on project they can build, paint and experiment with. Instead of only learning about volcanic eruptions from a book or video, children can create their own volcano model and observe a visible reaction as part of the activity.

What Makes This Volcano Kit Useful?

The combination of building, creativity and experimentation makes the activity more than a single science experiment.

• Build a volcano model: Children begin by creating the volcano structure, giving them a physical model to work with before the experiment begins.
• Make it their own: Painting and decorating the volcano adds a creative element and gives children ownership of the finished model.
• Explore volcanic reactions: The eruption experiment provides a simple way to observe a visible chemical reaction and discuss what happens.
• Connect play with Earth science: The activity creates an opportunity to talk about volcanoes, eruptions, lava and what happens beneath the Earth's surface.
• Learn by observing: Children can make a prediction, carry out the experiment and describe what they see rather than simply being given the answer.

Ways Children Can Explore With It

The activity becomes much more meaningful when the experiment is treated as an investigation rather than just an eruption to watch.

• Build and decorate first: Let your child complete the volcano model and choose how they want to paint or decorate it.
• Make a prediction: Before starting the eruption experiment, ask what your child thinks will happen and why.
• Observe the eruption: Watch the reaction together and encourage your child to describe what changes, what moves and what they notice.
• Talk about real volcanoes: Use the model as a starting point for conversations about volcanic mountains, lava, eruptions and different places where volcanoes are found.
• Repeat and compare: Where appropriate, change one part of the experiment and discuss whether the result looks different.
